OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
WARRIOR RIVER FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE, INC.
11283 Camp Oliver Road (Warrior River) Adger, Al  35006
A non-profit 501-c(3), tax deductible corporation

Our geographical location is a rural, unincorporated portion of western Jefferson County approximately 45 miles and 1 hour, 15 minutes from Birmingham, Alabama. We are situated on Bankhead Lake of the Black Warrior River, which is a navigable river controlled by the U.S. Corps of Engineers. Traveling through several inland waterway locks, connecting with various rivers to the Gulf of Mexico, your destination can be anywhere in the world by water. We are in a “cluster” of counties, Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa. The river separates Walker from Jefferson and traverses Jefferson and Tuscaloosa Counties.

We live in a recreational neighborhood of boating, skiing, and fishing.  Fishing here is the best of all surrounding areas. Memorial Day in may opens the season and Labor Day in September closes the season for those traveling here. Many people have second homes here but don’t live year ‘round. The word "Transient” is used by locals to describe those not owning a home here but are attracted from all over the state of Alabama to come and enjoy. The real secret that we don’t share is ---after Labor Day in September, we have several months of great boating weather, viewing the splash of fall colors on the trees, rock formations of the banks and sometimes harvesting a Christmas tree by boat. And speaking of Christmas, a local boating association sponsors a boat parade of the season the first Saturday of December. Across the river approximately 2 miles from our fire station, there is a wildlife reserve for deer hunting in Walker County. We have a lot of tugboats and barges shipping coal, wood chips, steel and at times hazardous materials. Especially beautiful at night. According to Alabama Seaport magazine, Alabama’s waterways provide more than 1,500 miles of navigable barge routes to carry the nation’s products. The Warrior-Tombigbee waterway ranks as the sixth business in the Unites States.

Our population is combined retired elderly, middle age and the young with children. Unfortunately, many elderly had to move closer to medical service due to health problems.

The coverage area of our station serves 650 rooftops, more or less, all within 5 miles of the station. We have three small churches, one “mom & pop” convenience store with bait, gas , picnic items, boat launch and small grocery items. The elementary and high schools are 10 miles away in another fire district. Most students are bussed to school.

Summer brings a lot of traffic; vehicular and boats. We have more than the usual number of accidents. Many of the accidents have been fatal, some maiming. Not to mention fires. Where once our fires were normally a total loss, we now have the ability to save residents property. We also have been very fortunate in not losing life due to fire. Travel time once an ambulance is summoned is usually an hour or more, depending on where an ambulance is located when called. And now we have a brand new fire department! 21 volunteers, 1 medic and growing. We ask for your best wishes.
